The Lead Teacher is to provide leadership and is responsible for coordination and implementation of the three program areas of the Head Start Program;
Early Childhood Development and Health Services;
Family and Community Engagement; and
program Design and Management.
Other responsibilities include monitoring day-to-day operations of the site.
The Lead Teacher must also ensure that State Licensing and Program Regulations are met.
It is expected that program recruitment takes place throughout the community at specific times, both weekly and on some assigned weekends.
Other duties as assigned within the guidelines of this position.


Ensures a safe and healthy environment that follows the Head Start/Early Head Start Performance Standards and Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) Licensing Standards.
Daily completion of Health and Safety checklist.
Implements the principles of the Creative Curriculum approach based on a child-centered curriculum that encourages decision-making, cultural awareness, and exploration. Children are provided with choices of learning center activities, large and small groups, and individualized activities.
Ensures that a variety of materials are kept safe and rotated frequently; with children’s materials separate from teacher supplies. In addition, maintain inventory of supplies and equipment, and submit requisition needs to site supervisor for approval.
Provides an individual labeled space for each child.
Develop and facilitate activities of the children, including: daily and special activities, field trips, selecting and arranging equipment and materials in the classroom.
Ensures that the children are actively supervised at all times.
Eats with children and provides appropriate social discussions and self-help skills during mealtime.
Maintain a comprehensive and ongoing portfolio assessment for each child, including daily/weekly observations in each developmental area, examples of the child's work, and a developmental assessment that is completed three times per program year. (Teaching Strategies GOLD)

Job Requirements:

Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education or related field. All degrees must come from a regionally accredited education institution which has U.S. Department of Education approval. Thirty-six hours or more of college credits in Child Development or related field is required if the degree is in another field.
Passage of complete background clearance, physical and Tuberculosis (TB) Test.
Understanding and promoting the social teachings of Catholic Charities.
Ability to apply professional expertise to the needs of children, parents, and staff.
Excellent oral, written and organizational skills, as well as, proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office applications.
Demonstrate the skill and competence to meet personnel qualifications as required in Part 407: Licensing Standards for Day Care Centers.
Ability to work independently and to accept increased levels of responsibility.
One to three years’ experience working in a childcare setting is required.
A valid driver’s license, reliable means of transportation and proof of liability insurance is required.
